Dog team parking (Other Dawson Issues)

posted by sebastian(R), 21.01.2010, 16:55

The City bylaw officer recently put up some posters telling people who mush into town and tie their dogs near the Gazebo to clean up after themselves or they will no longer be allowed to do so and a bylaw regarding tying up dogs in town will be enforced.
When I saw this I had a couple of thoughts: Yes, we should all be cleaning up after ourselves, in fact almost every musher does pick up their dog's droppings. There will be a little straw left behind.
Generally, the dog team parking area is at least as clean as the favoured dog walking trails- 9th avenue trail anyone?
Another way to look at this is that this is pollution arising from some people's alternative modes of transportation that are "idling" while their drivers shop and work in town. This is apparently problematic for the City. It thus seems somewhat ironic that other vehicles that can often be found idling around town are not subject to any penalty, despite the fact that the products of internal combustion engines are a source of air pollution here and a serious problem globally. Dog poop on the other hand is biodegradable.
Perhaps the City could come part way here and encourage people to do the right thing by placing the garbage cans back out in winter- in summer there are a couple by the Gazebo, but for some reason they are removed in winter.
Yes I do regularly bring dogs into town, and no I don't keep them by the Gazebo.
It might be cool to have a "barking lot" for dog teams, I saw one at Mount Mac in Whitehorse recently.
