City to cut down old growth trees (General Issues)

This is a call for help to save two old growth diciduous trees from being cut down by the City of Dawson. The City is proposing the trees located on the Corner of 7th Ave. and Princess St. be cut down because they are assumed to be dead on the inside. (even though they produce green leaves each spring)

The trees are said to pose liability issues, with risk of falling branches. But if you wanted to run a fine toothed comb over Dawson City, you'd have to shut pretty well the whole town down. Uninhabbitated historical buildings are at equal risk of collapsing, or luring the curious inside. These trees are more historical then any building in Dawson, and as for risk? They've withstood heavy snowfall and high wind storms in the past couple years without any grief. (the same windstorm that ripped the false facade off the old youth center)

The City claims they are on City property, though they sit in the front yard of a resident not in favor of cutting them down. The trees are handsome and grand old things, visible from most houses in the neighbourhood. They have old woodpecker nests, and its a favorite meeting place for ravens. They also provide shade, a windbreak and privacy for the house on the lot, the house I might add is a trailer with alunimum siding, which is not historically accurate and doesn't comply with City building codes. To cut the trees down would draw more attention to the trailer and less to Dawson's colourful cityscape.

Its times like this I wonder doesn't the City Council have anything better to bicker about then two old trees which have yet to cause any trouble to anyone? And isn't the council supposed to represent the citizen's desires for the community? This citizen has no desire to cut down old growth trees, if you feel the same way, please let your opinions be known, and I can only hope the City hears these concerns and listens.

Let's save a piece of Dawson's history that isn't generally thought to have signifigance in the colonial mind set. But can offer insight into Dawson's enviromental history and green movements.

City to cut down old growth trees

Too late to save those trees. They've been beheaded already. While I'll certainly miss the gathering of the ravens, I think it would be a stretch to call those trees "old growth". Hopefully the city will replace those trees with new ones.

That trailer, like many in Dawson, predates any historic building code bylaw we may have. You might even say it's representative of a different era of our town's development.
