Hal Kalman and Commonwealth Historic Resources Management Ltd was given an award by the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals (CAHP) for the Dawson City Heritage Management Plan.

The ceremony took place in Toronto on September 18th.

Mr. Kalman and his colleagues were engaged by the City of Dawson and the Heritage Department of the Territorial Government to apply their expertise to draft a plan for preserving and celebrating Dawson’s rich heritage. After several years of consultation with citizens and stakeholders a plan was presented to Town Council and subsequently was adopted.

This award winning plan was the basis on which Dawson’s new Heritage Bylaws were written.

One of many underlying themes in the heritage plan is the objective to celebrate and preserve all the periods of Dawson’s history beginning with the Gold Rush. Also, certain zones were established within Dawson with each area recognized as having a unique character.

Encouragement is also given to avoid constructing ‘phoney’ movie set type facades that have no historic relevance to the period.
